My Log for the production day of 'Hot Topic'

Multi-camera Production Log
The first experience we had to begin with the multi camera process was visiting countdown studio which was to provide us how multi camera works, to show us other job roles included in a multi camera production. The purpose of this was to give us an idea of what multi camera is before we begin the blog and create our own multi camera production.

During this process we also had to write 500 words in full detail about single and multi camera, this was to show that we fully understand what both term means and what the difference between them are. To complete this, it needed to feature related clips, images, diverse job roles within multi camera production and one specific job role we were given in class.

Before we prepared a proposal, we had all been practicing in the studio of different roles including, camera, vision mixer, sound, director, and producer and many more. This was to prepare us to see which role we’re good at and which ones we’re not and which role we enjoyed so that we can select the one we want to apply for when we begin the main show we will be creating further on.

After we had prepared ourselves by researching the term ‘Multi Camera’ we had to complete a proposal for our group’s show, one by one we all had pitch an idea of what the show would be called, what it would feature, where it will be broadcast, what target age we’ve chosen, which type of presenters we desired, what the set should look like and what else would be included in terms additional topics. After we all pitched our ideas, as a group we had to decide which proposal stood out and was enjoyable. After our group’s discussion we decided that none of the proposal was right for our show, however instead we chose different elements of each proposal that stood out, including title, logo, music, set image, topics, and others and put them into one show we all created during our discussion. We decided that the show would be titled as ‘Hot Topic’.

After the show had been decided, we all had to apply for the roles we had each been practicing for the past few weeks, I was given the role of Sound and Lighting, which meant I would be in charge of the theme song that will be included in the beginning of ‘Hot Topic’, I would be in charge of the lighting that would be applied on the set, I would also have to recruit a band who will be performing just before the end of the show.

Date: 19/03/ 2012

Since I’ve been offered the role of sound and lighting, I’ve began the search of recruiting the band we hope to have on the show, I visited the head of music and asked for his permission whether I was able to speak with some of his students about an opportunity of appearing in our show. Luckily the teacher was able to encourage a current band from his class to participate in our magazine show.

29/03/12

On this day, Jess and I approached the head of music again to get more details on the potential band we hope to acquire for our upcoming show. We requested whether the band would be able to perform a combination of diverse genres but mainly pop.
We also asked whether they would be available on the 16th April 2012 and 17th of April as those are the important dates we hope to film the show. After that was sorted, we asked for their contacts in case there were urgent information we needed to provide them about the show.

2/04/12

On this day, I emailed the head of music in order to confirm the band's appearance on the show, however I did not recieve a reply from him, whilst on that note; I also emailed him the next day and after many attempts, I decided to get in contact with one of my class members 'Sam Matthews' in order to require a subtitute band for the show, as he already had a band in mind we decided to use them for the show instead as we believed they were more reliable.

16/04/12
This was the day of trial, in order to make sure we were prepared for the actual filming day. On this day we made sure the setting was ready and perfect for the next day, we ensured the scripts were concluded and ready to be inserted on the autoque, we basically made sure everthing was finished and set to go.

Whilst helping others with their role, I spoke to 'Sam' and he told me that the band we had required would not be able to make it for the day due to the short notice they recieved.

17/4/12

On the day of filming, despite the absence of the band, we made sure we carred on as you would do in a real production if the people you expected had cancelled, we also made sure it didn't affect our focus and our role. As part of my position, I also undertook a few task which were mainly listening to my teacher and taking orders in order to make sure everything were running smoothly. In addition to this statement, unfortunately due to the time and a few stumbles we had along the way, we were not able to conclude the whole show as other people needed to leave and there were nothing we could have done to stop them. Although we didn't manage to finish the whole thing, we have gained many skills, knowledge and most of all experience that will be highly useful in case we decide to go into this type of industry in the future.

Evaluation of Production Process

Evaluation of production
What were my roles and responsibility on the day?
During the process of filming, my responsibilities were mainy listening and following instructions carefully; as my original role was sound and lighting, however; there were several times where I acted as a runner, I took orders and passed them onto whoever it was for, whilst on that note, there were also times where I left one of my team members in charge of sound and lighting as there were other tasks I had to tackle such as participating as an interviewee for our VT interview, visiting the Head of Music to request whether or not the potential band we plan on having on the show were still available to perform or not.
In addition to this, I also searched and contacted one of the participants 'Fred Farrell' who was initially supposed to do the voiceover of the competition for the ending of our show, however Fred was unavailable at that particular time so we had to use a member of our team as a subtitute for Fred's position since we didn't have enough time to recruit anyone else.
Strenghts and weaknesses?
I believe during this challenge, my particular strenghts were focusing throughout, working well in a team, listening and following instructions, making sure I was on top of my responsibilities and ensured I didn't panic too much. I think these strengths were beneficial in this exercise otherwise I wouldn't have been able to work as well I did and it probably would have affected other people in the group as it would've distracted them especially if there were any panicking inolved. I personally don't think I had any weaknesses as I helped out with other tasks that needed to be solved, I made sure I stayed busy as well as helping out in both the gallery and the studio.
What happened during the process and what have you learnt in this challenge?
As a group, I think there were times where we worked well as a team because we were all determined to get everything right in all the shots, various people worked hard and applied a lot of effort into their role, though others were confused of what was happening as there was a time were some people thought we were filming when we were only supposed to carry out a run through, some acted unproffessional during that situation and there were also a few people who I believe could have helped out more In terms of when we were struggling towards the end.
However even if we didn't conclude the show as a whole, we've gained the experience needed for this area of Journalism, we are all aware of how much effort, teamwork, hardwork and motivation needs to be included when it comes to the Television inustry; therefore we can take this experience with us and if we ever get an opportunity like this again, we will be more prepared and know how to overcome the challenges.

     Description of Celebrity Latest

The program we will be pitching is called ‘Celebrity latest’. The show is simply a magazine programme providing the public of all the latest gossip about celebrities. The target age range of this show is aimed at 16-34 year old and to be aired on BBC Three.

Introduction
Celebrity latest is an exciting lively show that focuses on all the latest gossip the public needs to be aware of about their favourite celebrities, it is a vibrant show that will be aimed at 16 -34 year old simply because it’s fresh, fun and includes a wide variety of other features such as fashion, varied topics, sports and many more. In addition to this, the show will also consist of varieties of celebrities and other guest stars to provide us further details of the subject.
The idea of this whole show is to get more people interested in Celeb TV Shows; as we all know more and more people aren’t purchasing magazines anymore as they now tend to visit online where it also happens to be free of charge, however the point of our show is to save the audience the trouble of researching the topic they want to read about as we will already be covering it on our late night show.
The Show
We would like the stimulating show to be broadcast on BBC Three as the channel’s intended audience are individuals’ aged 16 – 34 year olds which is the age range we are also focusing on targeting, furthermore the channel is extremely versatile as it covers all genre from Current Affairs to Drama, to Comedy as well as Animations, therefore we believe this shows would be suited for the channel. To add on top of that, BBC Three is an extensive network on television; because of it being vastly well-known it attracts a lot of audience, which is a major advantage for us as it will help with the ratings and the outcome of the show.
Another reason we would like this show to be aired on the BBC is in order for the audience to be able to catch it up on BBC I Player if they do happen to miss it. The day we wish for it to broadcast is on a Friday at 9:00pm because that is the time and date the majority of entertainment programs tend to air and it is isn’t too late for the average on the target audience range as the show will end at half 9; in addition to this, because the next day is the weekend, the average of the audience in all probability mightnot go to bed till at least 11:00pm will leaves them to watch whatever else they want to watch on that specific day.
The intended audiences for this program are initially celebrity fans meaning people who are immensely interested in music, movies, sport, Fashion, Gossip and individuals who will perhaps fall in between aged 16 – 34, predominantlyat C2 – E on the demographic scale.
To prepare a schedule for the show, we have researched BBC Three’s top popular shows that are a hit with the ratings, we came to a decision that before our program begins it will broadcast two episodes of  ‘Snog Mary and Avoid’ from 8pm to 9pm simply because of the concept of the show and how it is about taking an individual who outrages their look and giving both gender a complete makeover by making them look as natural as possible and considering this involves fashion, in a way there are particular similarities that reflects to ‘Celebrity Latest’ as we are both trying to influence people about different variety of looks.
The show that we have chosen to air after ‘Celebrity Latest’ is ‘Russell Howard’s Good News’ which is a topical comedy show featuring Russell Howard himself who offers his unique perspective on the huge stories dominating the media across TV, Online and in print. We decided that we want it to be broadcasted after our show as it contains strong language and the show is fairly similar to ‘Celebrity Latest’ as we are both trying to inform people about the latest news. Both shows are comparable but also varied at the same time.
The mode of address that is suitable for the show would be a combination of formal and informal language as we don’t want the presenter to sound too well spoken and we also don’t want them to talk less well spoken. We are looking to hire two presenters who are a male and a female and one will be aged 20, the other aged 25 which isn’t too old or too young, therefore they can both relate to the intended audience’s age. Both presenters will have a mixture of formal and informal dress sense, preferably a blend of vintage and modern clothes.

The idea we have in mind of what the set is going to look like is bright, strong, colorful, stylized image which will feature many articles and celebrities on the wallpaper. The theme song that will appear as the show begins will be exciting, fun, catchy and enjoyable for everyone to listen; it will represent the show as it is also gripping, entertaining and enjoyable to watch.
During the show, it will contain five different VT that cuts in between the program once we begin to discuss the topics; the five diverse video tapes are called Fashion Rebound, Social Impact of YouTube, The Life of Britney Spears, The Rise of FC United, and Comedy Impact which are all approximately five minutes long each.
The purpose of having these VT’S is to add other flavours into the show that will please both gender so that the show doesn’t just look like it’s targeted at women, we want men to be interested in the show as it offers the type of subject they’re interested in as well as what women are also interested in, therefore we hope it will satisfy everyone.
The first VT that will be aired is ‘Fashion Rebound’. The title may have given you an hint of what it’s about however the VT is purely about vintage fashion and the whole cycle of fashion in general, as we are in the 21st century, vintage shops that were immensely popular during the 80’s have now been brought back into our century and has certainly been as highly common as it was around the 80s. We’re talking about Retail shop ‘Urban Outfitters’ which originally included vintage clothes have now combined with modern fashion and have reformed a new clothing line which includes both vintage and modern clothes.
The second VT will include ‘Social Impact of YouTube’.
As we all know, a popular way of getting notice by people in the music business is by uploading a short clip of you singing and hoping someone from the music business will watch it. It also helps if you a vast amount of viewers who has seen
the clip and may have recommended you to others who have then done the same to others and so on, this helps as the person they have recommended it to could also be part of the music business and if they like what they saw it could lead to offering you a record deal.
There are many famous people out there who have been discovered this way, these people include Justin Beiber, Esmee Dentes, Dondria, Cody Simpson, Mia Rose and many more. Some of these people didn’t just get discovered for singing, some were by playing piano on YouTube and many other instruments.
The purpose of having this short VT is to target the people who are interested in music, some may be passionate about it and this video tape could help persuade them to do the same things as the artists above did if they really feel strongly towards music.
The third VT that will also be contained on Celebrity Latest is ‘The Life of Britney Spears’
Many people are aware that the hit me baby one more time singer has had a tough time over the years, there has been many articles written about her music life and personal life, there has even been many speculations about whether she is fit to look after her own children, whatever the story is; Britney Spears has been in the public’s eye ever since she released her first album ‘Baby one more time’ back in January 12 1997 and till this day she is still an international pop icon and “is famously one of the oldest teenager pop has ever produces, almost middle aged in terms of focus and determination” says Barbara Ellen of The Observer.
The key reason of adding this VT on is to show the fans of Britney who could be young audience who aren’t aware of as much information about her life unlike the middle aged audience who were around during the time of her appearance in the music industry. This short clip will display how she has transformed from when we first laid eyes on her back in 1997 till this day. This VT will include a range of Vox Pops, sources of imagery, archive as well as interviews.
The fourth and final VT that will be involved on the show is ‘The Rise of FC United’ which will display the full background of Manchester United football club, the VT will contain where the head office is centered and where press conferences take place, it will also feature how they have arisen over the past few years and are still at the top of their game, it discusses the past and present information about the amount of leagues they’ve won and lost as well as other vital data needed.
This VT will consist of numerous sources of imagery, a footage, archive, several Vox Pops and interviews included.
The purpose of comprising this VT on the show is to provide the male audience the sort of topic they might be interested in and to evidence that the show isn’t just aimed at women; it features a variety of subject that will also interest the male audience.
The fifth VT that will be included is Comedy Impact; this will show how comedy has differed over the years and how it’s made a made an immense impact on society today. It displays comedy programs including friends, My Wife and Kids, Raven and others and how it’s influenced the new comedies we now see on TV, it demonstrates what ideas they have taken from the old comedies and has been applied on the new ones.
Celebrity Latest is a brand new way of discovering all the latest gossip you need to be alert of, this show certainly covers that; it aims at both gender, it’s exciting, amusing, fascinating and entertaining and hopefully if it goes on air it will get a lot of people talking and will be as broad as we believe it can.

The difference between single camera and multiple camera

Single Camera and Multiple camera

The difference between single camera and multiple camera is; with single camera there is only one camera to capture the shots, however with multiple camera there is more than one camera on set to record the scenes, this makes the editing easier as there are various shots in front that you can select to broadcast, whereas the single makes the editing longer because there is only one camera which necessarily means you would have to search for the right scenes and this may take a huge amount of time. With single camera you have to take the shots separately as you only have one camera, however with multiple cameras you are able to capture the shots all at once as there is more than one camera around to do this.
As a whole, a production that uses the single camera setup usually book just one camera and each of the wide range of shots and camera angles is taken via the same camera which is relocated to reset and get shot or new angle. Also the lighting setup is typically reconfigured for each camera setup. Multiple camera setups consist of multiple cameras in order to film all of the diverse shots (also known as camera angles) of the scene at the same time and the set must be lit to position all camera setup simultaneously. The outcome of multiple camera production is normally quicker, however there is a reduced amount of versatile photography.

Multiple Camera

The Multiple Camera also recognised as Multiple Camera mode of production or even Multicam is a proccess of filmmaking and video production. Numerous cameras either film or professional video cameras are in use on the set and at the same time record or air a scene. It is regularly compared with single-camera setup, which uses one camera. Usually  the two outside cameras film close-up shots or ‘crosses’ of the two most energetic characters on the set at any given time, whilst the middle camera or cameras shoot a wider master shot to capture the comlete action and create the geography of the room, this way;  several shots are acquired in a single ‘Take’ without having to continuosly repeating to start and stop the action.

Here's  a brief example of multicamera shots.
http://www.youtube.com/embed/fMBviC-grVQ

In this short clip, it displays how multi camera is there to capture all that is needed to make the scene complete, it is able to show the presenter, guests and the audience as there are more than one camera around to show each and everyone of them. With multi camera it provides us a lot more than what single camera can offer, this is to allow the the audience at home to see everyone that is relevant to the show, this way they'll also feel part of it by simply watching the programme.

This is more well organised for programs that are to be publisied a short time after being shot as it decreases the time spent to film editing or video editing the footage. It is also a virtual requirement for standard, high-output programmes like daily soap operas, despite saving editing time, scenes may be shot promtly as it isn’t neccessary for re-lighting and the set-up of replacement camera angles for the scene to be shot all over again from the seperate angle. It also lowers the difficulty of tracking continuity issues that shortens when the scene is reshot from the distinct angles. This is a vital element of live television.

Drawbacks contain a reduction optimised lighting which requires to provide a concession for all camera angles and less suppleness in placing the essential equipment on scene, for example, there has to be microphone booms and lighting rigs. These can be ably out of sight from just one camera, although it can be difficult to set up and their position may be substandard in a Multiple Camera Setup.

Whilst shooting, the director and assistant director craft a ‘line cut’ by giving orders to the Technical Director or Vision Mixer if in the UK to change between the feed from the specific cameras. If this was sitcoms and includes studio audiences, this line cut is normally presented to them on studio monitors. The line cut may be sharpened up onwards in editing, regularly the output from all cameras is recorded, one by one and as a mix reference display which is identified as the ‘Q Split’. The camera currently being recorded to the line cut is specified by a ‘tally light’ which is also managed by a ‘camera control unit’ (CCU) on the camera as a reference both for the actors and the camera operators.
